The Agnes Tyrrell Project
One of R's largest musical projects reside in the body of works of late Romantic composer and pianist Agnes Tyrell, who lived in Brno, Czech Republic, just between prominent musical centers Prague and Vienna. Tyrrell had received extensive and intensive compositional lessons, completing a large number of works. Unfortunately, Tyrrell had become ill early in life with a heart condition and could not tour, perform, premiere, or publish her works as she had hoped. This left the majority of her works to be unheard, unperformed, and, ultimately, unpublished.
Under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Jocelyn Swigger, and with the aid, permission, and preserved manuscripts from the Department of History of Music at the Moravske Zemske Museum in Brno, Czech Republic, R has been able to typeset and publicly release many of these works. R is currently employed as a research assistant under the Sunderman Conservatory to complete this work, and was granted the support of the Gettysburg College Kolbe Fellowship over the Summer of 2024 to focus in-depth on the project over the span of 8 weeks.
The process consists of studying the manuscripts, rewriting note-by-note the entire piece into a modern notational software (currently MuseScore), editing with Dr. Jocelyn Swigger (finding errors, fixing what may not have been the intention to write, etc.), and publishing.
What currently is published of Tyrrell's works can be found on IMSLP (International Music Score Library Project) as well as under the Gettysburg Cupola as student scholarship. IMSLP contains the download of the scores, whereas the Cupola contains the most up-to-date works and raw MuseScore files alongside the regular download.
R has found immense and satisfaction in the Agnes Tyrrell project, and has the privilege of working closely and intently with a fantastic composer's works. They believe it has been incredibly important to create awareness of Tyrrell's music and to get her music out to the world through a modern, accessible, and free release. Tyrrell has opened up R's eyes and knowledge of the world of theory, composition, and performing. R is currently interested in projects of a similar nature and looks forward to expanding the realm of music and composition as it exists today.
